"The first Baptists in the county were the Scaggs and Hankins.  The first sermon preached to them was by Rev. Simon Cotterel, from Russell County, in 1796.  Their first meetings were held in private houses, in the Hankins' settlement...In 1897, the late Jonas J. Sparks, who had long been clerk of that church, wrote '...in reference to BAPTIST VALLEY CHURCH.' "  (Vol. 2, pages 302-303)  ORGANIZED:  About the year 1810 by Elders Thomas Colley and William Lazewell. MEMBERSHIP:  The first settlers of the Valley--The Hankins, the Scaggs, and others.  PREACHERS  UP TO 1843:  Thomas Colley , William Lazewell, Jonathan Quicksall and William Henkle.  PREACHERS  FROM 1843---1897:  Elder John Wallis, 1843-1856;  Elder Wm. P. Linkous, 1856-1882 and Elder Jonas R. Sparks, 1882-1897.  OTHERS WHO PREACHED  IN THIS CHURCH:  Jonathan Hankins, Thomas Grimsley, Robert Stinson, J. Thomas Stinson (son of Robert), A.A.
