Charles Jackson Newberry, aged 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Newberry, who live near Raven, Tazewell Co., was drowned Sunday afternoon in the Clinch river at Raven.  Newberry and fifteen other boys had gone swimming and it is thought he was seized with cramps when he dived off the plank.  The other boys did not miss Newberry until they were on the bank and noticed after all had their clothes on that an extra suit was still on the bank.  Some of the boys went for help and several men came, one of whom had seen Newberry jump off the plank.  Another boy dived into the river and touched the drowned youth with his feet and Newberry's body was brought to the surface. Efforts were made to revive him but life was extinct.  Funeral was held at the Newberry home Monday and interment in the Raven cemetery.  He is survived by his parents and several sisters and brothers.
