Feb. 2, 1952 --

MARVIN GILLESPIE -- Marvin Gillespie, 68, of Tazewell, died Tue. night Jan 25th in a Tazewell hospital following an apparent heart attack at his home Tue. afternoon. Born at Raven, he was a son of Corrie Crockett Gillespie, of Tazewell, and the late W. G. Gillespie. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1931 and at the time of his death was a member of the VMI board of visitors. he served in the Pacific during WWII as captain with the fourth US Marine Corps division. He was a member of the Stras Memorial Episcopal Church and the Tazewell County Country Club. Prior to his retirement, he was owner and operator of Gillespie Stone co. Bluefield, Va. He was a director of Tazewell National Bank and Blue Grass Oil Co. Survivors in addition to his mother include his widow, Charlotte Pegues Hunter; and three sisters, Mrs. John Ellis Jackson of Tazewell, Mrs. Claude Mullen of Richlands and Evelyn Gillespie of Tazewell. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Stras Memorial Episcopal Church in Tazewell with Rev. Bruton Strange officiating. Burial followed in Maplewood Cemetery.

ROBERT ROSE -- Robert E. Rose, 66, of Tazewell died Wednesday Jan 26th at his home after a long illness. He was a retired miner and a member of the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge in Grundy Va. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Ellen Boothe Rose; five sons, Jack Rose of St. Augustine FL, James Rose of Tazewell, Bill and Jerry Rose of Manassas, Va. and Donnie Rose of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Sherline Duncan of Richmond, Va. Mrs. Judy Meredith of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Betty Boardwine of Manassas; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Barrett of Columbus Ohio. Funeral services were conducted Friday at Greever Funeral home in Tazewell with Rev. Bobby Overton officiating. Burial followed in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands.

MAE COLE -- Mrs. Mae Mathews Hess Cole, 74 of 955 Big Creek Road, Richlands, died Saturday night Jan 29th in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.  Born in Belfast she was a daughter of the late George and Mattie Steele Mathews, both Russell County natives. She had made her home on Big Creed Road for the past eight years and was a member of the Holiness Church.  Surviving are her husband, Joshua Cole; three daughters, Mrs. Josh Gilliam, and Mrs. Corbin Gilliam of Walton Ky. and Mrs. Charles Hilton of Dayton Ohio; two sons, Edd Hess of Jewell Ridge and Sgt. James D. Hess, of Pease Air Force Base, N.H.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Ruby Sipe of Ok and Mrs. Edna Bowers, Caretta WV; six step sons, Ulise Cole of Perryville, Md., Lee Cole of Jowell Ridge, Woodrow Cole of Sunrise MD, J. W. Cole of Benicia Cal. Carl Hess, Jewell Ridge, and Frazier Hess, of Tazewell; one sister, Mrs. R. R. Hodges of Chesapeake Va. 15 grandchildren, 18 great grand children, 2 great great grandchildren and 22 step grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tue. in Hurst-Scott funeral chapel in Richlands with Rev. E. C. Price and Rev. Jimmy Adams officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill. Pallbearers were Larry Gilliam, Jerry Gilliam, Josh Franklin Gilliam, Glen Allen Hess, Robert Leon Hess, Charles Ronald Hess, Tommy Shortt and Steve Smith.

April 11, 1952  -- 

C.W. BOYD -- C.W. Boyd, aged 70, a retired lumberman and widely known Tazewell Citizen, died Sunday in a Richlands hospital where he had been admitted the previous day.  Mr. Boyd was the organizer of a number of lumber companies in Southwest Virginia.  His death was attributed to a heart attack.  Mr. Boyd was born in Russell County near Swords Creek, and was a son of Elijah and Octavia Hunt Boyd.  At the age of 12 years he was employed as laborer for the Norfolk and Western Railway at Swords Creek, later he entered the
employ of the Yellow Poplar Lumber Co. of Buchanan County.  Later he orgranized and supervised the following companies: White Oak Lumber Co., Virginia Hardwood Lumber Co, Kennedy Coal Corp and the Tazewell Milk products Association.  Mr. Boyd was a resident of Richlands for a number of years and in 1920 he retired to his farm near Plum Creek.  He was a member of the Pisgah Methodist Chruch.  He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Vida Elswick Boyd; three sons, E. Ferrell Boyd, of Bristol Tenn; Bailey Boyd of Tazewell and Russell Boyd, of Haysi: five daughters (the obit only lists four however) Mrs. G. Thomas Johnson, of Knoxville, Tenn, Mrs. Eliza Ireson, Mrs. Bille DeBoard and Mrs. Thomas Taylor all of Bristol, Va; a brother J. A. Boyd, Erwin, Tenn; and two sisters, Mrs. Rhonda Runyon, of Swords Creek and Mrs. Dora Boyd of Sparta, ohio.  Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the First Methodist Church in Richlands.  The Rev.W. E. Mustard of Tazewell, the Rev. L. W. Pierce, of Bristol and the Rev. C. E. Wilson officiated.  Burial was in Jones Chapel near Cedar Bluff.  Active Pallbearers: Bourne Barrett, Fred St. Clair, Jack Witten, Hubert Peery, Bill Leece and Buddy Brittain, all of Tazewell; honorary;  H.O. Pratt, Senator Harry Stuart, R. O. Crockett, Dr. J. W. Witten, John St. Clair, C. C. Self, Dr. J. P. Williams, Dr. James Peery, Dr. L. L. Thompson, Judge Frank Smith, V. C. Smith, Earl Smith, Marshall Looney, Jim Maxwell, John I. DeBord, Dr. T.C. Sutherland, Earl Wallace, Joe Gillespie, W. L. Painter, C. Henry Harman, C. P. Gillespie, Fred Combs, S. R. Hurley, John Matney, Joe Neel, Otis Nash, Harry Thompson, Hon. George C. Peery, Bill Raines and Clint Barnes.

MRS. JAMES R. DAVIDSON -- Mrs. James R. Davidson, age 46, of Maxwell died in the Mattie Williams Hospital June 28th, from a stroke. Funeral services were held in the Mt. Pleasant church Tuesday with the Rev. W. E. Mustard officiating, assisted by the Rev. J. A. Mullins. Interment was in the Maxwell cemetery. Mrs. Davidson was the daughter of the late Estil T. Kinder and Minnie Davis Kinder. She is survived by her husband, James Davidson and the following children; Mrs. Willard Amburgey, of Tazewell; James of North Tazewell;  Mrs. Allen Lawson, John Walter, Cora, Pierce, Roy, Margaret and Eugene Davidson, of Maxwell. One son preceded her in death. She is also survived by her step mother, Mrs. E. T. Kinder, of Tazewell; two brothers, Robert Kinder, of Bluefield WV; and W. E. Kinder of N. Tazewell; two sisters Mrs  Roy Harris and Mrs. J. B. Riley, of Bluefield WV. One half brother, Boyd Kinder of Tazewell and two half sisters, Erline and Mamie Kinder of Tazewell.

SALLY N. HURLEY -- Mrs. Sallie N. Hurley, 86 years of age, died June 25 in a Radford hospital. The Hurleys were at one time residents of Tazewell. There survives four daughters; Mrs. W. W. Levi, Mrs. W. A. Vest Jr. Miss Blanche Hurley, all of Radford; Mrs. Peters, of Richland; two sons, D. P. Hurley of Rockville, Md., W.N. Hurley, of Gaithersburg, Md.; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sat. at the Central Methodist Church at Radford.

W. VANCE STOWERS -- W. Vance Stowers, aged 57, died of a heat stroke last Friday at his home near Leesburg while shocking wheat on his farm. Mr. Stowers was a native of Tazewell Co but had lived in Loudoun County for the past 27 years where he owned a large farm. He was a member of the Leesburg Methodist Church.

MARY BELLE BEAVERS -- Mrs. Mary Belle Beavers, aged 79, widow of Mose Beavers, died Sunday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Gross, near Cedar Bluff.  She was born in McDowell Co. and was a daughter of the late William and Rebecca Beavers. Her husband died 12 years ago. Surviving are one son and an additional daughter, William Beavers and Mrs. Pearl Christian, both of Cedar Bluff, one brother, Joe Beavers of Cedar Bluff; three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Sparks, of Jolo; Mrs. Eliza Christian, of Priceton and Mrs. Patty Harman, of Cedar Bluff. Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Gross home. The Rev. Farley Beavers and the Rev. C. H. Harris officiated. Burial was in the family cemetery.

July 11, 1952 --

Misfortune has struck Mr. and Mrs. Tom Caudle and their five small children of Pounding Mill. Their cow got on the railroad track Saturday night and was killed by the train. Sunday A.M. their house caught on fire and was destroyed, and all their possessions went up in smoke. They had erected a house near the bridge below the station. Contributions are being made to help this family out. If you can contribute please do so.

ALICE KIMBERLIN EDWARDS -- Mrs. Ray Edwards died last Thursday in St. Luke's Hospital in Bluefield W.V.  Before her marriage Mrs. Edwards was the former Miss Alice Kimberlin, daughter of the late. E. E. and Mrs. Lydia Kimberlin of Ceres, Va.  She is survived by her husband, two sons, William Ray, of Tazewell and Robert Lyn, of the United States Navy, stationed at Norfolk.  Three sisters and one brother also survive: Mrs. John T. Baugh, of Bluefield; Mrs. Abbie Fogleson, of Jonesboro Tenn., and Mrs. Stella Kitts of Bluefield; and Claude Kimberlin of Bluefield. Funeral and burial services were held Saturday afternoon at Ceres.

WILLIAM FRANCIS MOORE -- William Francis Moore, age 75, died late Friday of a heart attack at his home in North Tazewell. He was the son of Sarah Mundy and Spottswood Moore. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Pentecostal Church at North Tazewell with the Rev. Roy Mullins conducting the services, assisted by the Rev. H.H. Peek and the Rev. William E. Jelf. Burial was in Maple Cemetery. Mr. Moore is survived by his wife, the former Miss Margaret Louise Patrick; and six children, Mrs. Adrian Wood Jameson and Mrs. Kermitt Marion Johnson, of Chicago; Mrs. George Henry Linkous and Mrs. Alderson Morrison, Jr. of North Tazewell; Mrs. Fred Kitts and Mrs. Reinor Wallace, of Bluefield Va.; one brother, S. A. Moore of Bluefield; one sister, Miss Margaret Spence of North Tazewell. Active pallbearers were; Wiley Taylor, Audrey Edmonds, Charles Noakes, Clifford Hankins, W. D. Starling, Woodrow Myers, Edward Remines and Herbert Peek.

Nov. 15, 1952 -- Pounding Mill

Miss Dortha DeBoard was the dinner guest of Mrs. C. H. Robinette and Mr. and Mrs. David Ribinette Tuesday evening.

Billie Simpson is still a patient in the Mattie Williams Hospital but his leg is improving now.

Mrs. Rex E. Steele of Bluefield Va. spent Sat. with Mrs. M.H. McGee.

Miss Mavis Elswick of here, accompanied Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Shelton and Estle and Misses Jackie and Billie Cunningham of Richlands, to visit Mr. and Mrs. John Shelton and family of Cucumber on Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Tinsley had as guests on Sunday Mr. and Mrs. T. K. Smith and David, of Maxwell and Mrs. Frankie Jessie of Stuart Va.

Sgt. Robert Thacker and Mrs. Thacker and two children, who have been stationed at Camp Campbell, Ky for some time, moved their trailer here Sat. He has been called to go to Japan soon.

Mrs. C. H. Trayer and daughter Miss Peggy, spent the weekend in Abingdon, with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mogan.
