Walter McGinnes:  page 6B, Clear Fork District:  Pocahontas;  Dwelling 105;  Family 109;  Head of household; white; male; born December 1858 in Scotland;  age 41;  married 11 years;  father born in Scotland; mother born in Ireland;  Came to the U.S. in 1882;  has been here for 18 years, citizenship status:  alien;  coal miner;  unemployed 2 months of the census year;  can read and write;  can speak English;  owns farm free from mortgage;  #43 on farm schedules.   Wife:  Harriet, age 40.  Children:  William 23, Walter 16, John 11, Daniel 9, Clarinda 7, Charles 4, George 2. *** Author's note:  The oldest son, William, was born in Scotland and is listed as having both of his parents also born in Scotland.  It appears that the father, Walter, was married to a Scottish woman before marrying Harriet.  The son, Walter, is listed as being born in Pennsylvania, and again his mother is listed as being born in Scotland.  The son named John is listed as having been born in Tennessee, and his mother was born in Scotland as well.  This leads me to believe that the father, Walter, was married previously and had the three boys:  William, Walter and John.  And then, he married Harriet, and had the four remaining children who are all listed as having been born in Virginia ... and their mother is listed as having been born in Virginia.  When we refer to Harriet's place of birth ... the state of Virginia is listed.  Another clue to this situation being the case is that Walter and Harriet have only been married for 10 years in 1900, meaning that again the three oldest boys (William, Walter and John) were born before that marriage. ***
