John Vandike was in Company H, 23 Regiment of the Missouri Volunteers.  He died of typhoid fever Sep 1, 1863 at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis and is burried there in the National Cemetery.

The war must have been very tragic for Assena.  Her brothers were all in the Condederate Army and her husband and her sister's husband were in the Union Army.  Assena's husband, John Vandike died during the war which would have been bad enough, but 5 of her brothers were also killed during the war.
